A rooster fitted with a knife for an illegal cockfight in southern India has killed its owner, sparking a manhunt for the organisers of the event, police said
As per news, the rooster had been fitted with a three-inch knife called a “kodi kathi” prior to the blood sport event, which was being held at the Yellamma Temple in Jagtial District, Telangana, on February 22
However, as the bird tried to escape, its 45-year-old owner was inadvertently impaled in the groin by the blade. The knife had been attached to the rooster’s leg.
The owner died from loss of blood on his way to a nearby hospital.
The man was among 16 people organising the cockfight in the village of Lothunur when the freak accident took place, Jeevan said. The rooster was briefly held at the local police station before it was sent to a poultry farm.
Local police officer B Jeevan said: “We are searching for the other 15 people involved in organizing the illegal fight.”
B Jeevan, a local police officer, said others involved in the event could face charges of manslaughter, illegal betting and hosting a cockfight. Jeevan called it a “freak accident”.
The cruel so-called sport has been banned in India since 1960, but the fights are held in rural areas such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha states.
In December, police smashed an alleged elaborate cockfighting syndicate with 71 cockerels saved and 35 men arrested at a property south of Sydney.
